The longer we are here in Arizona, the more things we discover that are different from living in the Midwest. The most obvious things would be humidity levels, vegetation, scenery, and outdoor school campuses among others. This past weekend, we discovered another difference....the pumpkin patches! On Saturday, Eric and I loaded up six kiddos and headed to the pumpkin patch. We had no idea what to expect. I assumed there were no actual "patches" where pumpkins were grown here in the desert, but the website looked fun and inviting so we took it! It turned out to be lots of fun, just not so much about pumpkins! And the best part about it was that Saturday was its opening day. It was about 95 degrees out. And we were one of only four families there!
It was more like a cowboy town of the wild wild west. We started with a horse drawn hay ride out to the pumpkin "patch." Eric thought it was hysterical. Check it out....
Afterwards, we played in the hay maze, running, hopping in sacks, and even playing tag. I think between Eric, and all the kids, the haystacks were pretty much trampled.
There was a miniature petting zoo, where Kate and Caleb braved the inside of one of the cages. Next came the gold mine where the kids panned for gold painted giant rocks! Later in the day, the kids used those rocks to pay for foot massages from each other. :) One particularly dangerous part of the pumpkin patch had several golf clubs and balls. Apparently you were supposed to chip the balls off of the rocky dirt, through wooden cutouts placed in front of you. It looked like an accident waiting to happen, so we quickly passed on that fun.
We finished the afternoon off with pony rides. The real deal. Not a horse hooked to a chain walking in a circle, but a guided walk through the cowboy town. Caleb even took a turn all by himself!!! All in all, the new experience was well worth it. Although, we do miss the pumpkin cannon from Eckert's.
