Last week we ventured with Bushia and the boys to the big island for a few days to enjoy and explore another Hawaiian island. While there was minimal exploration occurring, we did enjoy every minute of it! Here is an extreme look back at our adventures….We'll start with just the first day. Otherwise the length of the post and the amount of pictures could get out of control real fast!
Here we are arriving at the Honolulu airport bright and early!
And just a bit later…we were in Kona!
The terrain change on the big island were so drastic. We drove for hours through barren lava fields.
Of course the boys could play with rocks all day!
We made it to Hawai'i Vocanoes National Park after lots of driving! Something we are no longer used to. :)
After stopping at the visitor center, we checked out the steam vents. It was hot and stinky!
The temperature up in the park was cold! Jonah loved the hot steam!!!
The steam was super cool…it was randomly venting from all over the place!
Video showing the steam…and some quality parenting moments. :)
We were unable to view any flowing lava as that is currently only visible from the air. It was still pretty cool to see.
We also stopped at a short hike to traverse through a lava tube.
This was still in the National Park and you can see the vegetation is completely different then at the rim.
Heading into the tube...
We then drove up through Hilo and headed to Akaka Falls. Again, I knew this would be a short hike with a great reward.
Lots of lush, jungle vegetation...
…and the reward! A 400ft waterfall!
It was a marathon driving day for us as we circled the entire island. Although we missed some other extremely cool spots on the island, I was happy to see what we did and knew that once my kids got to the resort they wouldn't want to leave! So day 1 was our marathon tourist day!
