Week 4: Miscellaneous

This week Mom has gotten LAZY! The pregnancy is certainly catching up with me. No specific theme for the week but we read lots of books about the circus, dogs, and other random things.
Monday we spent lots of time at the library playing on the computers. Tuesday we went to a new library and to the doctor's office.....3cm dilated, 80% effaced....all of which means nothing to me until I actually go into labor. Wednesday movie we saw How to Train Your Dragon. Thursday is sort of a blur. And Friday we went to the Circus to celebrate Father's Day!

Otherwise, much of the week was spent in the pool, trying to beat the heat and stay cool.

Week 3: Sports

This past week we spent our extra time on reading all about different sports. For our field trips, we went bowling one day and also attended the season opener for our WNBA team, the Phoenix Mercury. The game was much more entertaining than I had thought it would be. I mean, I love playing basketball, but I also realize that watching men play is much more exciting than watching women. Diana Taurasi is one fun player to watch...extremely talented and very passionate about the game.

Monday = computer time at the library

Tuesday = doctor visit where I was told the baby is VERY low (as if I couldn't already tell) and that I am 2-3 cm dilated already

Wednesday movie day = Megamind

Thursday's Library activity = zoo animals (after which my boys proceeded to pretend to barf like a scorpion eating the entire way home)

Week 2: Rocks and Minerals

This past week we spent much of our readings on rocks and minerals. Besides our AMY field trip, we also ventured to the Arizona Mining and Mineral Museum....unfortunately, it was closed for construction but we still got to see a few cool pieces of equipment outside.

Caleb was most impressed by the GIANT mural on the back side of the building.

Noah was able to identify this as petrified wood....guess our readings payed off.

I was impressed by the size of the tires used on the excavator in one of the mines here in AZ. The bucket was also outside on display and it was so large, my kids could literally run around inside of it!

In addition this week, the boys got to see a puppet show about a Saguaro hotel at the Library, had a full week of swimming classes, and watched Ramona and Beezus at the movies. And of course we celebrated Dad's birthday and made lots of goodies!

Week 1: Farming

In an attempt to save money for our newest arrival this summer (and to keep me busy so I don't feel like I am sitting around WAITING all day-everyday), the boys have foregone their summer camps this year and are staying home with me for all their entertainment needs. For the first full week of summer, the boys and I focused on farming as our theme. Basically all of our books and DVDs from the library focused on this topic. We even took a field trip to Schnepf Farm where we saw many things we had been reading about in action. By the end of the week, Noah had decided he was going to be a farm hand when he grows up. Hmm, perhaps we should revisit the space project he did during the last week of school when he was going to be an astronaut. Or perhaps next weeks theme should be Entrepreneurs. :)

Here are the boys ready for the train ride at the farm.

We basically had the entire farm to ourselves and the boys spent hours playing on the playground, harassing the peacocks, and running through the hay mazes.

There was even a slide that landed you right into the Pygmy goat pen. Caleb made lots of friends here.

We passed on the u-pick vegetable garden (because it looked like it would be too hot in the direct sunlight) and instead took some time to pick peaches in the peach grove. Noah thought it was pretty cool to just eat a peach right off the tree! (Usually he would be too grossed out.)

Later in the week, we used our peaches to make peach cobbler. It was pretty much amazing and was totally gone by the time we went to bed that night.

Our un-themed activities for the week included story time and computer play at the library, trips to the park and school playground, our Wednesday summer movie series (Clifford's Really Big Movie), swimming, and a trip to a local splash pad on Friday afternoon. This is one of the newer ones in our neighborhood and was our first visit. We met some friends there for an afternoon of play and I can guarantee that we will be back as the weather gets HOTTER! Cool water, lots of shade, some grass, and a candy store nearby. Good plan.
