Dad's 35th Birthday

The man of the family turned 35 on June 9th and I felt the need to do something special.  Other big birthdays have come and gone and we have always had a good time and enjoyed the days.  This time around, I planned early and decided to surprise Eric with an overnight trip for just the 2 of us to Kaua'i. I'm not positive, but I think this is the first trip we have ever taken alone together since our road trip to Sandusky, Ohio sometime around 2001.

Uncle Tom came to our house on Saturday for a "BBQ," and brought extra clothes to stay the night as we would have some adult drinks.  Little did Eric know…he was staying 2 nights so he could care for our children while we were gone!  I ended up surprising Eric Saturday evening as our flight left at 5:18 the next morning!

We had such a fun time!  Here is a little review in photos….

 And 27 minutes later….landing on Kaua'i.

First stop Waimea Canyon State Park. And then a little breakfast at a local cafe.

Got to take a look at Ni'ihau and Lehua off in the distance (17 miles off shore).

And we made it around the island and to the north shore to our hotel in Princeville by 11 a.m.  Thanks to our early start! 

We were unable to check in until about 3:30 so we made friends with the pool bar and watched some playoff bball for a while.  We later played pingpong poolside for a while and met lots of wonderful people!  So, so fun. 

Monday morning was another early start for Eric's actual present…playing golf at the The Prince course in Princeville, Kaua'i.

 They even had a place for me to rest while Eric warmed up. :)

 The driving range was unlike Tower Tee, where I used to frequent.

 We experienced the full effect of Kaua'i weather…trade showers and all!

 The natural waterfall was my favorite part!

 Kaua'i is filled with chickens.  So many more than on Oahu.  Apparently there are no mongoose on that island leading to the increased poultry population. 

 We cut it a bit close after a nap at the resort pool and a trip to Secret beach.  We were being paged at the airport, "Last call for Amy and Eric Selter!" as we were rushing through security.  We made it, sandy feet and all!

Eric visits STL

Last week Eric traveled to St. Louis for work. Thankfully he had the weekend free to spend time with family! 

And of course he came home with a bag full of goodies from Grandma and Grandpa! :)

And even a deluxe Imos pizza for me!

Dad's Month

Between his birthday and Father's Day, June tends to be the month of Dad around here.  As we have been recovering from our two week stay-cation, both events were rather low key around here.  Plus Dad has been busy at work so much of his time home has been very chill.

On his birthday morning, we celebrated with funfetti angel food cake and presents.

means LOTS of smoke when the candles are finally blown out!  The boys had to fan out the smoke. :)

 and later, Mom and Dad met Uncle Tom for some fun times.

On Father's Day, Noah was actually out of town with a friend, and again it was a very low key day.  This time, the day started with a mustache cake!

 And later was followed by lunch with Caleb and Jonah.

The month of Dad is quickly coming to a close, ending with a special someone's 2nd birthday next Sunday.  Add in a couple of golf outings for Dad, and I'd say the young man has enjoyed his month.  :)

Dad's Racing Season

When we first moved here, we found an ad in the paper advertising the Honolulu marathon and Eric decided he was going to try to run in it.  I have named myself his official coach, haha!  Basically I had my sister, who has taken up running long distances within the past few years, send me a marathon training schedule that her running groups use, and I wrote it on the calendar for Eric.  :-)
He completed his first big run, a 15K this past Sunday and did a mighty fine job.  It amazes me, that only four weeks ago, he was not running, and the man can now just pick up and run a 15K.  He is a stud.  Since it was a 6 a.m. race in Waikiki, the boys and I opted to sleep in and just enjoy dad's pictures online later.  You can see them by clicking here and here.
He finished in less than 1 hour and 25 minutes which is phenomenal for his first race over 4 miles.  He is still trying to learn and figure out the art of pacing and training for such.  He tends to be a bit competitive....and I know I don't help by scrolling through the finishers list and calling out all the women and 60+ year old runners who beat him. Haha....a little tough love by the coach.
Great job Dad!  Such an inspiration for me and the boys.  Only 4 more months until the BIG one!

Daddy is 33!

Happy Birthday to Mr. Selter!

Daddy/Uncle Eric is 33 years old today....where did the time go?!?!

Cake for breakfast at 7:00 a.m., perhaps even a bit earlier!  It's only, 9:20 and we've done coffee in bed, cake, presents, hair cuts, visited a garage sale, and took a trip to the recycle center earning almost $15.  And watched an episode of Phineas and Ferb.  Happy day for Eric so far!

Japan

Not a family vacation, but a work trip for Dad.

Eric returned home safely after a week long trip to Japan. He had little to report, saying that you could have dropped him in the middle of New York City and he wouldn't know any better. :) I think he was looking for the Asian style homes with the "swooped roofs." Not so much in Tokyo. He mainly interacted with Americans on a military base there, but did venture out to try some local dishes. He called me from L.A. Saturday morning complaining about how STARVING he was. Either the dishes weren't so hot or he was missing those American sized portions!
